KRONE X WHATIFTHEWORLD was established in 2018 at the Twee Jonge Gezellen wine estate in Tulbagh. Hosted in an historic building on the farm, the gallery was born from the collaborative vision of WHATIFTHEWORLD and Krone. Being geographically situated outside of the bustle of the city, the gallery becomes a contemplative space for viewers to engage with art in a more intimate and immersive way.
In 2019, an artist-in-residence programme was set up at the farm as a way of encouraging artists to take risks and create ambitious works and installations, without the pressure of a commercial outcome. The residency offers artists the chance to work in a more organic and less linear way, while surrounded by the natural environment.
KRONE X WHATIFTHEWORLD is proud to present 40 under 40 , a showcase of 40 artists under the age of 40.
The selected works, created largely during the pandemic, address a world which demands renewed negotiations of intimacy and sociality. The artists’ responses span painting, photography, sculpture, and installation, and reflect on the one hand, a deep care for images which bind us to history and, on the other hand, an impulse to experiment with entirely new forms of expression. The exhibiting artists share a desire to create hybrid, often poetic forms that are a testament to their ability to meet challenges with innovation and sensitivity. Placed together in conversation, these artists – some of whom are up-and-coming, while others are already well established – represent a generation determined to flip the script and manifest new ways of making and being in the world.
The exhibition will be hosted at Our gallery at Twee Jonge Gezellen Estate the home of Krone in Tulbagh from 11th September 2021 – 28th February 2022
Visiting hours are: Wednesday – Friday from 10h00 to 16h00, and on Saturdays from 10h00 to 16h00. Or by appointment. Please check Krone’s website here for current programming.
