Super Nature by Peter Eastman

09 Nov - 01 Dec 2007

Whatiftheworld / Gallery 208 Albert Rd. Woodstock

The first solo exhibition by artist Peter Eastman at Whatiftheworld / Gallery. Eastman came to South Africa soon after he was born in 1976 in Newcastle-upon-Tyne, United Kingdom. He grew up in Johannesburg, and matriculated at Rondebosch Boys High School in Cape Town where Henry Symonds taught art history. After a year at Michaelis School of Fine Art, he decided to make art on his own. He subsequently worked as a restorer of antiquities in London before returning to Cape Town in 1998. He has had two small solo exhibitions and his work has also been included in numerous group shows. Eastman works from his studio in downtown Cape Town and is best known for his emphasis on surface textures using high-gloss, reflective enamel paint. His range of cityscapes and figures formed the basis for his successful solo exhibition entitled ‘Reflective’ at Michael Stevenson Contemporary in 2004. Eastman’s work is included in numerous collections including the Hollard Collection, and he was selected as a finalist for both the Sasol New Signatures (2005) as well as the ABSA Atelier (2003).
