Grafik (London) presents Felt-Tip
23 Jun - 22 Jul 2007
OPENING: 11:00am SATURDAY 23rd Jun 2007
Whatiftheworld / Gallery 208 Albert Rd. Woodstock
Felt-Tip is an exhibition organised by Grafik magazine, in association with Letraset.
A limited edition A5 postcard cataloge designed by Value and Service, available for purchase.
The exhibition will continue to tour internationally throughout 2007.
The posters in this exhibition are the work of thirty of the most talented designers and
illustrators practicing today. We invited them to create an artwork using very simple
materials–a sheet of A1 premium paper from GF Smith and a set of Tria Markers from
Letraset. Our aim was to create an opportunity where designers could step away from
their computers and create a piece of work that required them to interact physically with
their materials. We wanted to see what today’s best designers would do when asked to
pick up pens and draw, rather than rely on their Macs.
The simple brief, inspired by the qualities of Letraset Tria Markers, was to create a poster
celebrating colour, play and the marker pen aesthetic. We were surprised and delighted
by the results as the Felt-Tip posters began arriving at Grafi k. The range of approaches
was totally unexpected–some participants had embraced the opportunity to get down to
good old fashioned drawing and colouring-in, others had devised ways of mechanising
their pens, while others still had chosen to deconstruct the pens themselves and transfer
the ink directly onto the paper. In several cases the subject matter of the posters is the
pens themselves: some artists have made illustrative representations of the pens, others
have made abstract studies exploring the material qualities of the ink and the way the
paper responds to it, other still have taken an analytical approach and made colour
studies. Many designers took Felt-Tip as an opportunity to explore personal ideas and
themes. Whatever his or her approach however, each Felt-Tip artist has succeeded in
fi nding an innovative and expressive use for their Tria Markers and we hope that
Felt-Tip has given them the chance to explore and realise a new or nascent idea.
