WHATIFTHEWORLD / GALLERY is pleased to announce the launch of the latest Editions for ArtThrob print portfolio this Saturday (the 4th of February). The portfolio contains prints by the following artists: Dineo Seshee Bopape, Georgina Gratrix, Cameron Platter, Athi-Patra Ruga, and James Webb. Each artist worked with a printer of their choice to produce their print.

WHATIFTHEWORLD / GALLERY is pleased to present Separate Amenities: Topographics of Recreational Spaces in South Africa by Vincent Bezuidenhout, a new exhibition of photographs. Bezuidenhout’s latest body of work examine the way in which the landscape was constructed to enforce separation, in the form of separate amenities, during the time of apartheid in South Africa. These separate amenities created a system of total segregation of races in South Africa in terms of daily social interaction, with facilities such as beaches, parks, walkways and swimming pools divided into sections for ‘white’ and ‘non-white’ groups.

A Novel In Parts to close on the 1st of October

Whatiftheworld would like to announce that Renée Holleman’s solo exhibition, A Novel in Parts will be closing on Saturday, the 1st of October. The gallery will be open by appointment only between the 4th, and the 7th of October for show installation.

Michael Taylor selected for solo presentation at London Art Fair 2012

Whatiftheworld is pleased to announce that Michael Taylor has been selected for a solo presentation in the Art Projects section of the 2012 London Art Fair. Art Projects is a section of the London Art Fair dedicated to showcasing a selection of emerging artists from around the world hand-picked by curator Pryle Behrman.

Athi-Patra Ruga / Tribute to Photography Exhibition - Milan

Athi Patra-Ruga’s work is included on the exhibition ‘A Tribute To Photography’ at Milan’s Primo Marella Gallery from 09 June - 31 July, 2011. The aim is to trace a powerful, sophisticated route through the last thirty years of photography and create a truly international overview. More than 50 artists, drawn from all parts of the world, have been selected, with priority being given to absolute quality and the artistic meaning of single works.

Cameron Platter on show at MoMA

Whatiftheworld is pleased to announce that Cameron Platter is part of the current exhibition, Impressions from South Africa, 1965 to Now at Gallery MoMA. The exhibition runs from March the 23rd to August 14th 2011, For more information click here

Jan-Henri Booyens in Residency / iaab-Ateliers

Jan-Henri Booyens currently has a residency at the iaab-Ateliers in Basel, Switzerland. The artist is working on a project titled ‘Shifting Land Mass.’ Booyens recent paintings and prints are currently featured at our Johannesburg showroom CO-OP.

VOLTA NEW YORK 2011

Whatiftheworld has been selected for the second consecutive year to take part in VOLTANY during the Armory Arts Week in New York City from 03 - 06 March, 2011. By putting the focus back on artists through exclusively featuring solo projects, VOLTA NY promotes a deep exploration of the work of it selected projects, an opportunity for discoveries that move beyond those afforded by a traditional art fair.The gallery will present a solo presentation by Athi-Patra Ruga.

Cameron Platter selected for Fountainhaed Residency / Miami

Gallery artist Cameron Platter has been awarded a residency at the Foutainhead in Miami for 2012. The Fountainhead Residency was founded by collectors Dan and Kathryn Mikesell in early 2008. Unique to The Fountainhead Residency is the opportunity to become truly integrated into Miami’s vibrant, close-knit, and very supportive art community. Artists will be given an opportunity to meet and receive feedback from respected curators, collectors, gallerists and artists here in Miami.

Michael Taylor featured on the cover of Art South Africa Magazine

The work of gallery artist Michael Taylor is currently featured on the cover of Art South Africa Magazine (Volume 9.1). Titled King of the jungle, the painting was exhibited as part of a recent solo exhibition at our Johannesburg exhibition space CO-OP. The artist will present a new solo exhibition at the gallery in the first half of 2011.

Gallery artist Athi-Patra Ruga is included in recent articles/reviews in the two latest editions of frieze Magazine. Issue 133 September 2010 Don’t Show That! - Contemporary African artists respond to prejudice and homophobia; and Issue 134 October 2010 Exhibition review of For Those Who Live In It at MU in Eindhoven, Netherlands.

Dan Halter Selected for the Glenfiddich Artist Residency Program 2010

Now in its ninth year, the Glenfiddich Artists in Residence programme has become widely acclaimed in the art world for providing artists with an original setting, space and community in which to work. This year’s participants are seven internationally established artists: Shiau-Peng Chen (Taiwan), Dan Halter (South Africa), Carrie Iverson (USA), Damian Moppett (Canada), Matthew Sandager (USA), Valay Shende (India) and Mao Yan (China) and Royal Academy of Art in London student, Hayoung Kim from South Korea. Since its inception in 2002 the programme has seen 63 leading international artists from 16 different countries living and working at The Glenfiddich Distillery in Dufftown, Speyside.

ROWAN SMITH + ATHI-PATRA RUGA AT DAIMLER CONTEMPORARY BERLIN

In the year of the Football World Cup in South Africa, the Daimler Art Collection aims to continue its long years of addressing and intensively promoting South Africa’s cultural development with an international contemporary art exhibition in Berlin. The presentation is arranged in dialogue form, juxtaposing current performative, conceptual and abstract tendencies in contemporary South African art with selected works from the Daimler Art Collection.

Dan Halter at Son Gallery / London

Gallery artist Dan Halter has a solo presentation at Son Gallery in London from 04 June - 04 July, 2010. Titled ‘Shifting The Goal Posts,’ the exhibition features works from a recent project centered around the Beitbridge border between South Africa and Zimbabwe. This border is notorious for the number of Zimbabwean immigrants that cross it illegally to make their way into South Africa.

Gallery artist Athi-Patra Ruga has been selected for the exhibtion “…for those who live in it - Popculture politics and strong voices” showing at MU in Eindhoven, The Netherlands from 21 May - 01 August, 2010.

TWENTY - SOUTH AFRICAN SCULPTURE OF THE LAST TWO DECADES

Gallery artists Rowan Smith, Dan Halter, and Cameron Platter have been selected for the exhibition ‘Twenty - South African Sculpture of the Last Two Decades’ at the Nirox Foundation. The exhibition is an exploration of important South African sculpture of the last twenty years, reflecting the shifts, challenges, changes and achievements this country has seen, from the release of Nelson Mandela to the hosting of the World Cup. Diverse works by more than forty artists are featured including; Edoardo Villa, Willem Boshoff, Jane Alexander, William Kentridge.
