Athi-Patra Ruga Presents Solo Show at Fred (London)

Gallery artist Athi-Patra Ruga currently has a solo show on at Fred (London) titled The Works. The exhibition runs from 19 February - 21 March 2010 and also marks the launch of an upcoming exhibition program at Fred that focuses on African Contemporary.

JULIA ROSA CLARK SELECTED AS CURATOR OF THE YEAR ON ARTTHROB

Gallery artist Julia Rosa CLark has been selected as ‘Curator of the Year’ on Artthrob’s ‘Best of 2009’ list for her show Sing Into My Mouth at Whatiftheworld (May 2009). Sing Into My Mouth included enquiries into the nature of intimacy, desire, influence, exchange, memory/ false memory, self, autobiography, interpretation, poetics, contingency, dormancy and resurrection.

The gallery is pleased to announce that it has been selected for VOLTA NY, the American incarnation of the successful young fair founded in Basel in 2005. VOLTA NY was conceived to continue the original mandate to create a tightly-focused, boutique affair that would be a place for discovery and concentrate on current and topical art production.

Cameron Platter at Hilger Contemporary in Vienna

Cameron Platter currently has a solo exhibition on show at Hilger Contemporary in Vienna, Austria until 23 February, 2010. Titled I am Lonelyness, it is Platter’s second solo presentation at Hilger Contemporary, following the sell-out success of Too Much of Anything is Very Dangerous in 2008.

In ‘…after he left’, Athi-Patra Ruga documents his alter ego Beiruth and its journeys to scale the façade of a charismatic church in Cape Town’s East city. It hovers and struts its way through Atlantis’ taxi rank. Both poignant and disturbing, Ruga questions notions of identity and prejudice.

New Works by Cameron Platter

Currently preparing for an exhibition of video works at Art Basel Miami, and working towards a solo show at Whatiftheworld next
year. Cameron Platter’s work creates an intoxicating vision of urban contemporary Africa. Drawing on traditional craft and wood carving techniques, Platter combines contemporary African street culture using influences as diverse as Nigerian ‘porno’ films, township couture, and drunken shabeen meat fests. Using established and respected traditional mediums, Platter creates a tableau that is at once a sincere homage to historical themes and an ironical take on contemporary Africa.

CO-OP Launches in Johannesburg

CO-OP is a collaboration between DOKTER AND MISSES and [WHATIFTHEWORLD] in association with OPEN.
